Kings of Leon + others (ie. Serj Tankian and the Editors)

Hola me friendos!

Today, I’m focusing on Kings of Leon + The Editors.

So. Kings of Leon. Nashville based brothers/cousin Caleb, Jared, Matthew, Nathan Followhill.  A rather electronic sound, tending to focus on the bass and drums.

They have 3 albums out: Because of the Times, Aha Shake Heartbreak, Youth and Young Manhood

Now, I’ll only talk about Because of the Times, because it’s the only one I own/have heard.

Along with a few more rock-like tracks, there are quite a few softer tunes.  Well, they start soft, then build up till it’s rock anyway. I don’t really know whether rock is even the right description.

My favourite tracks are Knocked Up, My Party, On Call (one of their more famous songs), Fans, and a few others.

I think the reason I really like these songs, is I’m a sucker for harmonics… and ones like Knocked Up are full of ‘em.

Let’s move on shall we.

The Editors.

I’ve only heard them on the radio, and probably only a few of those tracks, but I love them too.

A Song they play a lot on Triple J is Smokers Outside the Hospital Doors, and I love it. It’s just so, dark or something. Anyway.

For the last maybe two weeks, I’ve thought Empty Walls was also by the Editors – not really sure why, now I think about it – but after a bit of research just then found out it’s actually Serj Tankian who sings it. So he’s in my favourites at the mo too.

Serj Tankian is a Lebanese born Armenian-American poet gone wild. His newest solo project is Elect the Dead on which he plays just about every instrument.

Well, doing a blog like this really makes one realise how little of an artists work they know, or how a little research can reveal a lot, and all that. So I’ve realised I know next to nothing about the above artists, and really, for most of them, have only heard one or two songs.

So, I leave you, humbler, tireder, and ready to eat chocolate!!! :P

Regina Spektor

*A Bronx girl by way of moscow*, she is one of my absolute heroes.

Her music, while completely listenable to is slightly different. Mainly she plays the piano, but a few tracks feature the guitar. She has a range of… interesting vocal stunts (I can’t really think of a better way to put it), and different- but cool lyrics. Probably her best known songs are Fidelity, and Samson. They’re my favourite songs, like, ever!!!! oh, and her cover of John Lennon’s Real Love – that’s beeeaaauutifullll!

She has two albums- Begin to Hope, + Begin to Hope bonus cd, Soviet Kitsch and a few live albums. I have all things related to Begin to Hope.  And, have only heard two, at the most, from her other album(s)  http://www.reginaspektor.com

Mystral Tide is my unearthed band of the day. An electronic/dance band from  Melbourne, Victoria. I have only downloaded Acute in Nil but am presently listening to Live at Dream Nightclub – don’t particularly like it, possibly why I didn’t download it. Might have something to do with the fact that it’s more for a nightclub than sitting and listening to – as far as I can tell it doesn’t have lyrics. Their unearthed page is:

http://www.triplejunearthed.com/Artists/View.aspx?artistid=1920  and their website is www.mystraltide.com

*I just copied this from her myspace bio thing. I don’t even know what ‘being a bronx’ exactly means…

Angus & Julia Stone + more

Hey all (ahem… anyone????)

I figured that seeing as I haven’t written anything for a few days, I probably should.

Angus and Julia Stone. (my subject for today)

Heard of ‘em? A bro/sis duo that have recently released a single – The Beast and  an EP – A Book Like This. In the past they’ve also released Chocolates and Cigarettes, and Heart Full of Wine.

While I only own the iTunes version of Chocolates and Cigarettes, and ‘The Beast’ single (don’t have much money nowadays) I love ALL their stuff.    Angus has a… smooth (do you understand ANYTHING I say?) voice – slightly haunting, where as Julia has a pixie like – I think that’s probably the best I can do to describe it- voice. I love both their voices, so, yeah.Probably my favourite tracks would be:

Chocolates and Cigarettes, The Beast, Wasted, All of Me, Mango Tree, and Private Lawns.

Really, I love all of their songs, except for one… and it’s still growing on me.

I’m still finding, kind of like, a groove, for this blog… like I don’t know how much to say, whether to rave or whatever, whether to put albums/favourite songs on there… that kind of stuff.n :P  So, if this is over-the-top, or others have been excessively boring (just like me) I beg your pardon. :-)

An unearthed band I think is pretty groovy is LANEY.  I think they only have one song (well, I’ve only downloaded one), but it’s groovy with electric piano (I think), an interesting beat, and harmonized/smooth vocals (a bit like Eva Cassidy’s). The one song I have is called Gravity.  I like it quite a lot.Their unearthed page is

ah well…

Hello. (yawn).

Was planning for a nice quiet relaxed weekend… reading books, watching movies, but no. Mum hightailed it off to Ballina to visit her parents, and I was left with the responsibility of being without a mother :P

I have, however, managed to listen to a fair bit of music, watch a movie, and read SOME of a book…. (the rest of the time has been spent yelling at the kids for not helping, or burning myself while cooking. :(ouch. It blistered and everything)

ANYWAY.

some cool music (I’ve decided to put up a few today) is….

Form of Audio – another unearthed discovery, one that’s being featured on triple j this week.

A hiphop, rap (a few emcees in there) band, just a groove along to (love the wah guitar fx). http://www.triplejunearthed.com/Artists/View.aspx?artistid=5742

Sarah Blasko – if you haven’t heard her stuff, you’re missing out. I WORSHIP it!!!! It’s just so… great, my style, quiet or loud…. it’s just gold!!!  A pop singer, who plays electric, acoustic and piano.

Er, and have I mentioned them? I can’t remember…. Jackson Jackson. Harry’s whatshisname and the pianist from  Cat Empire’s (another GREAT band) side project. It has a few other members, but I don’t know a lot about them.

They’re dance, electronic, acoustic, and something else.  I just think they’re the most awesome band EVER (except for Sarah Blasko and a few others :P ) As far as I know they only have one album – Fire is on the Bird, and I’ve only BOUGHT two songs off iTunes,  But I lurve ‘em!!!!

I don’t want to use up all my cool bands yet, so that’s it from me.

NOTE: I have over 400 (and counting) songs in my itunes library. I’m not about to run out of bands I like.

Robyn

okay, so she’s pretty well known, and I’ve only heard one song…… (until now, when I just listened to iTunes samples) And from what I can work out I only like one song….. (Konitchiwa Bitches). She’s a Swedish pop arti st, and from what I’ve heard (an interview on the radio) she’s got an attitude, and a great love for the weird (sounds like me:P) Er, it’s hard to desribe songs, but this one is like a mixture of dance, hip hop, and something.  But it’s cool, and it’s dance- along material.

Yeah, well, I like it. :)

annoying!!!

A few months ago, I was on the computer for like, 5 hours or something :P and just went to unearthed.com.au, and was just listening to anyone who I thought I might be interested in…. and around that time, (I think) I downloaded a song called ‘not really love’ and the other day, I put ALL the songs that I’d downloaded into iTunes… and, that particular song, doesn’t have an artist as part of the track name (or details), AND as far as I can tell, it’s not on Unearthed either…. so I’m like, well, WHO is this singing, (cos whoever it is has the most beeeautiful voice EVER) and I’ve searched the net, but NO LUCK…. I might try Myspace… but most people wont let you download their tracks… so I don’t know.

 Anyhow, it’s very frustrating!

NOTE FROM THE FUTURE: I’ve found out who it is, and in the future I have posted a post about it, or the artist (Abby Skye) is in the post anyway. I’m very happy I worked out who it was.

hmmm..?

I realised last night, that, if I wanted this could be a blog about all the cool music I’ve found – and I’ve decided… yes. That’s what it’ll be about… because, really, I’ve got my myspace thingy, so this can be something different!!!!

So, cool musician of the day – CiCiLeu (you can find their music at http://www.triplejunearthed.com/Artists/View.aspx?artistid=13832 they’re a really cool, dance along (quietly…?) band – my favourite is Acid from the South

Helloooooooooooooooo World!

Hi. I’m me – in case you didn’t know.

And basically, I’ll put a few tracks of my own, throw in a bit of my life, and a few photos and I guess you could call that a music blog.

If… for instance, you wanna know who the heck I am, you can find out on my Myspace Page – there’s a few links around the place. Cos I’m just TOO lazy to write a WHOLE other ‘about me’ thingymajig.
